  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup warm whole milk
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 1/4 cup softened unsalted butter
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tbsp red food coloring (gel or liquid)
  • 1/2 cup softened unsalted butter (for filling)
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar (for filling)
  • 2 tbsp ground cinnamon (for filling)
  • 1/2 tsp salt (for filling)
  • 8 oz softened cream cheese (for frosting)
  • 1/4 cup softened unsalted butter (for frosting)
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar (for frosting)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract (for frosting)

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine warm milk and water. In another bowl, mix flour, sugar, yeast, and salt. Gradually add warm liquids along with butter, eggs, cocoa powder, food coloring, and vanilla. Mix until a soft dough forms.
  2. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth. Place in a greased bowl and let rise until doubled in size (about an hour).
  3. While dough rises, mix filling ingredients together in a separate bowl.
  4. Roll out the dough into a rectangle about ¼ inch thick and spread the filling evenly.
  5. Roll tightly into a log and cut into even pieces (about 12). Place in a greased baking dish.
  6. Cover rolls and let rise for another 30 minutes while preheating oven to 350°F (175°C).
  7. Bake for about 25 minutes until golden brown.
  8. Prepare frosting by mixing all ingredients until smooth and spread over warm rolls.
